Pay: $24 to $29 per hour

The Cultural Manager will lead the integration of Lakota/Dakota language, traditions, stories, ceremonies, and values into every aspect of Wozu’s work. This leadership role is essential to grounding Wozu’s programs in the spiritual and cultural ways of the people, ensuring that all activities—from land stewardship to education—are guided by cultural protocols and Indigenous
knowledge systems.

The Cultural Manager will be responsible for developing and overseeing a wide range of cultural programming for the community, including traditional and contemporary events, intergenerational workshops, seasonal observances, and ceremonial activities. The role serves as a cultural guide to strengthen identity, wellness, and the community’s connection to land, ancestors, and each other.

Drum and Song Circles:
Teaching and hosting regular sessions on traditional Lakota/Dakota songs, meanings, and protocols.

Sweat Lodge Ceremonies:
Coordinating with spiritual leaders to offer inipi (sweat lodge) ceremonies for healing, purification, and community prayer.

Tipi Teachings:
Sharing the teachings of the tipi, including cultural significance, family roles, seasonal use, and tipi setup.

Language Revitalization:
Incorporating Lakota/Dakota language into events, signage, stories, and daily practice across Wozu’s programs.

Seasonal & Ceremonial Calendar:
Observing the Lakota/Dakota seasonal calendar, including solstices, equinoxes, and plant/animal cycles.

Budgeting for the Program:
Plan and monitor budgets for cultural events, language learning sessions, and partnerships with knowledge holders.

Financial Management:
Ensure timely tracking of spending and alignment with funding requirements for cultural projects.

Communication:
Engage with cultural leaders, elders, and community members to c-design events. Share updates with staff, community and funders on cultural milestones and programming.

Managing Personnel:
Supervise cultural coordinators, event facilitators, and volunteers. Offer guidance rooted in Indigenous values to support team development.

Managing Program Equipment & Resources:
Maintain ceremonial supplies, regalia, drums, and other cultural resources. Coordinate space use for events and ensure respect for cultural protocols.

A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are preferred.

High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Indigenous Studies, Cultural Studies, Education, or a related field preferred. Equivalent experience and cultural knowledge will be considered in lieu of formal education.

Work is performed in a variety of settings, including office environments, outdoor ceremonial grounds, community gathering spaces, and classrooms. Occasional exposure to smoke, heat, or cold during ceremonies and seasonal events may occur.

This role requires local travel within the region to attend or lead cultural events, collaborate with elders and spiritual leaders, and visit program sites. Occasional overnight travel may be required for cultural gatherings or conferences.

The position requires regular standing, walking, lifting ceremonial items (up to 30 lbs), setting up event spaces, and participating in outdoor cultural activities. The ability to move freely across uneven terrain during outdoor events is necessary.
