Bringing people together around the table
This past week, Wozu’s Culture Preservation Program brought the community together for a hands-on learning experience in buffalo butchering, led by Culture Manager Ron Lebeau and Verlinda. Over 30 guests attended the workshop, where youth and community members had the opportunity to gain practical skills while celebrating cultural traditions.
Throughout the day, youth learned how to identify different cuts of meat, including both traditional cuts and meal-ready portions. They explored essential techniques such as trimming off silver skin, processing buffalo into ground meat, and preparing buffalo steaks for cooking.
The atmosphere was filled with laughter and teamwork as youth paired up to learn together, encouraging one another as they built confidence in their new skills. Afterward, everyone gathered to taste freshly cooked buffalo steak samples, a delicious reward for their efforts and a way to connect food, culture, and community.
Events like this not only teach valuable skills but also strengthen cultural knowledge and bonds between generations—helping ensure that traditions and practices continue to thrive for years to come.
