Education through collaboration
At Wozu, we believe the future begins with our young people, and no one embodies this mission more than Saunders Young Bird, our Youth Coordinator. With a passion for teaching and connecting, Saunders provides education in all things Wozu—land, social, and culture—through hands-on, youth-centered experiences.
From building tipis and participating in traditional sweats to preparing cultural meals and exploring the Lakota language, Saunders ensures that every activity is rooted in tradition while encouraging today’s youth to find pride in who they are.
This past summer, Saunders helped lead youth programming that saw over 300 participants take part in unique experiences like buffalo butchering, fishing fundamentals, cooking classes, and off-road biking adventures. Each activity gave young people the chance to gain new skills, deepen cultural understanding, and build lifelong friendships.
Whether you’re a parent, educator, or community organizer, Saunders can bring the spirit of Wozu’s youth program to your area. By creating safe, fun, and meaningful spaces, Saunders empowers young people to feel seen, heard, and supported as they grow into tomorrow’s leaders.
