New Life on the Prairie
Welcoming the Next Generation of Bison to Cannon Ball
A Symbol of Renewal
This season, the prairie at welcomed a powerful sign of renewal: the birth of new bison calves within the managed herd. Their arrival marks more than just the growth of our herd — it represents the return of balance, strength, and cultural resilience on our homelands.
For generations, bison have stood as a living symbol of abundance and harmony for the and people. Each calf born reconnects us to that living heritage, carrying forward the spirit of the land and our responsibility to care for it.
Early Days: Growth and Care
In their first weeks, bison calves are surprisingly agile — standing and walking within hours of birth and quickly learning to stay close to their mothers. Their thick, reddish coats distinguish them from the older members of the herd and provide warmth as they adjust to the prairie climate.
Over the coming months, they’ll rapidly grow in size and strength. By their first winter, calves begin developing the darker, shaggier coats of maturity, and by the time they are 2–3 years old, they’ll be fully grown and contributing members of the herd.
Strengthening the Herd and the Land
Each birth is a sign of a healthy, thriving ecosystem. As the herd grows, so does its positive impact on the land. Bison naturally aerate the soil, disperse native plant seeds, and maintain healthy grasslands through their grazing patterns — all essential parts of ’s broader stewardship mission.
By carefully managing the herd and expanding grazing areas, we help protect the land from overuse while ensuring that the bison have space and resources to thrive for generations to come.
Looking Toward the Future
The arrival of these new calves brings hope and responsibility. They represent the future of our herd — future leaders of the prairie ecosystem, and living teachers of our cultural traditions.
In time, these young bison will help sustain traditional practices, educational programming, and land stewardship efforts for our community. Watching them grow reminds us of our shared duty: to walk gently, care deeply, and protect what sustains us all.
A Living Legacy
Each calf born at Cannon Ball is more than new life — it’s a promise kept. A promise to restore balance, protect the land, and pass on the strength of the bison to the generations who will follow.
As the herd grazes under wide prairie skies, the sound of small hooves reminds us that the circle continues — strong, unbroken, and full of life.
