Meet the Bison

Bison are North America’s largest land animals, and they’ve lived on the prairies for thousands of years. They are strong, smart, and very important for the land and people.

What Do Bison Eat?

Bison are herbivores, which means they eat only plants. Their favorite food is prairie grass! By munching on tall grass, bison make room for new plants to grow. Their grazing helps flowers and other plants spread across the prairie.

How Do Bison Help the Prairie?

  • Their hooves act like little garden tools, digging up the soil so seeds can grow.
  • Their grazing keeps the land healthy and brings back birds and pollinators.
  • When they move around, they create spaces for other animals to live.

How Long Do Bison Live?

Bison can live up to 20 years in the wild! Calves (baby bison) are born in the spring and have reddish coats that turn brown as they grow older.

Why Are Bison So Big?

Bison can weigh up to 2,000 pounds! Their size helps protect them and keeps them strong against the cold winters of North Dakota. Their thick fur coats keep them warm in snow and storms.
